NIJI NO MATSUBARA PINE GROVE

NIJI NO MATSUBARA PINE GROVE
Specially designated in Japan as one of the country’s three largest pine groves the Niji no Matsubara (Rainbow Pine Grove) curves along the coast near Karatsu Harbour in the shape of a rainbow. The pine grove is 4.5km in length and 0.5km in width with approximately 100,000 black pine trees growing in the area. It is said that the origins of the pine grove date back to the 17th century when the first generation feudal lord of Karatsu planted black pines in the area to protect against the tide and high winds coming off the sea.
